What employees actually use an HR app for - and how to roll one out
Check-in, leave and payslips account for most of the use. Here is how to launch an HR app so everyone installs it in the first week.
Mobile App
An HR app succeeds when employees open it every day for something they need. For most teams that is attendance, and everything else follows.
What gets used most
- Check-in and check-out - every working day.
- Leave - balance, apply, status.
- Payslips - monthly, and whenever a bank asks.
- Notifications - approvals, notices, birthdays.
- For managers: approving the team's leave and corrections from anywhere.
A one-week rollout plan
| Day | What to do |
|---|---|
| Before launch | Add every employee with their mobile number, reporting manager and shift. Enrol face photos if you use face match. |
| Day 1 | Announce the date the app replaces the register. Share the install link in your company group. |
| Days 1 - 3 | Help desk at the entrance: install, sign in, first check-in together. |
| Days 4 - 7 | Run app and register side by side. Fix location and camera permission problems. |
| Day 8 | Register retired. Corrections only through the app. |
The usual problems, and fixes
- "Location required" - turn on GPS and allow location for the app.
- Old phones - a face kiosk tablet at the entrance covers staff without a suitable phone.
- Shared phones - not allowed with face match, which is exactly the point.
The TezzHR app (Android and iPhone) has a home screen with the day's check-in and month at a glance, and a footer menu for Attendance, Leave, My Team or Inbox, and More - with every module the company's plan includes.
